Bohedal: 3 Generations of Women

Discover the story of one woman who pushes her daughter and granddaughter into the passionate world of wine, to achieve her dream

It is not so common to find a winery run by 3 generations of women. That’s why today I would like to tell you the story of my family, the story of Bohedal.

Bohedal is a small family winery located in La Rioja (Spain).

Fe Bezares

My grandmother (Fe Bezares) was born into a family of farmers in a small town with less than 300 inhabitants. She lived in a small house with her parents, two brothers, and a sister. Her mom was Esperanza, she was involved in household chores, tending livestock, and raising her children. And her father was dedicated to the cultivation of grain, vineyard, and winemaking.

If Fe liked anything, it was accompanying her father to the winery. It was a ritual that she did every day.

In the morning when she woke up, before going to the village school, she visited the winery to greet her father. But the night visit was really special. She went with her father to the old winery and they went through each room to make sure everything was in order.

Unfortunately, my grandmother could not follow the wine tradition. In the Spanish society of those years, it was impossible and unimaginable for a woman to do business like a winery. However, she made a promise to her father that she would never sell her vineyards, nor lose her love for wine.

Blanca Baños

After many years of working very hard and with a lot of effort, she managed to raise the money to create and found her own winery.

This is how her daughter Blanca joined this project and her mother’s dream.

Both women started all the work and requirements necessary to be able to have a winery and start making and aging wines. In less than 2 years, Fe Bezares’ dream would come true and the first grapes entered the winery.

Blanca is one of the first women to occupy the management position in a DOca Rioja winery.

Remarkably, when they started this adventure in the institutions and organizations, nobody had hope for them and even laughed at the fact that two women were going to carry out a project like this. They got downhearted but, of course, mother and daughter never gave up.

Leire Tejada

In 2002, after finishing my studies, I, Leire, Blanca’s daughter and granddaughter of Fe, joined this project. I must admit that at first, I was not enthusiastic about the idea. I had not yet discovered the great world of wine and saw it as very hard and exhausting work.

I think that the maternal winemaking bond had not yet awakened in me, it might have been that I was still too young.

In a short time and suddenly, without thinking, I discovered that my life was the winery; the project that my mother and grandmother had started.

The three together have visited wine fairs, bottled, harvested, distributed wine to clients and we have opened the doors of our house to receive Spanish and international clients and visitors as well. The winery is our home and not just a place where we work. Today we contest that the three of us are up for the challenge defending Bohedal tooth and nail, showing that wineries are much more than places where wine is made.

The winery is passion, it is feeling, it is heart and tradition and your feelings are always more intense when they are inherited from your mother’s teachings or are already unknowingly inscribed in your DNA.

In a short time and suddenly, without thinking, I discovered that my life was the winery; the project that my mother and grandmother had started.

Do you want to know the wines of this winery run by 3 women?

In our boutique winery we only make 100,000 bottles a year with native varieties from La Rioja and we try to intervene as little as possible with the wine. We want our wines to express the identity of our land.

We currently have the following wines available:

This entire collection of wine is exported in Europe, the USA and Asia.

Labels with women’s sewing

You will surely be struck by the labels of our wines due to their color and design. In La Rioja, as in the US for many years, women have kept small pieces of fabric to sew quilts, using the patchwork quilt technique. The women of our family for many years have sewn these traditional Patchwork Quilts and this is our tribute to them.

Can you visit this boutique winery?

Bohedal is a winery that offers guided tours, wine tastings, and multiple gourmet experiences throughout the year. The visits are always taught by a member of our family, so the attention is totally personalized, making it a unique experience.

Our winery received in 2019 one of the greatest awards in the wine tourism sector, the Best Of Wine Tourism for innovation.

For us, it was one of the most beautiful days of our career because it was the recognition of the crazy ideas of a granddaughter, the work of a daughter, and the illusion and dream of a mother.
